The next SolidWorks Hampton Roads User Group Meeting will take place on:

Tuesday, September 28th 2010 at 6PM

at:

Busch LLC
516 Viking Dr.
Virginia Beach, VA 23452

Come out and enjoy Good Food, Professional Networking and fun!

This month’s meeting is sponsored by Access Manufacturing.

Access has been serving the machine shop and manufacturing industry for over 20 years now. We cover the whole east coast as the exclusive reseller of CAMWorks. Therefore, all of our attention is towards CAMWorks and our customers. We have six full time CAMWorks certified support engineers. Our technical support and training is simply unmatched.

Featuring “A few things you might not know about SolidWorks…” and a demonstration of CAD/CAM integration with CAMWorks.

Some information about CAMWorks:

Thirteen years ago, CAMWorks became SolidWorks very 1st Gold “CAM” Partner. CAMWorks is an intuitive solids based CAM solution that helps manufacturers increase productivity and profitability through best-in-class technologies and adaptable automation tools that maximize machining efficiencies, and are yet simple to use. It supports 2 to 5 Axis Simultaneous Milling, 2-4 Axis Lathe, Mill/Turn, Live C, EDM, Waterjet, Plasma, Laser, and Routers.

Its seamless ‘single’ window integration within the SolidWorks® environment facilitates in automatically accommodating changes to the part model, thereby eliminating time consuming CAM system rework due to design updates and thus enabling true associative machining.

CAMWorks eliminates the drudgery of CNC programming with Intelligent Machining through automation. This suite of tools automates the generation of toolpaths based on a Knowledge Based database. It eliminates hours of complex programming through Automatic Feature Recognition (AFR) that automatically defines prismatic machinable features, while the TechDB™ (Technology Database) defines machining operations to automatically generate accurate toolpaths at the click of a button.

Please RSVP so that we can get an accurate count for food.

As always, SHRUG Meetings are free and open to anyone interested in SolidWorks, regardless of subscription status or reseller affiliation.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting! Please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone who might be interested in attending. If you have any questions, please e-mail them to:

Hello again everyone -

A few quick updates:

1. The last newsletter indicated a potential meeting in May – unfortunately we will not be able to hold a meeting in early May – but we will be holding one in early June! Details are being worked out, and once a specific date has been nailed down, the invites will go out. the topics mentioned in the last newsletter will be covered at a later meeting.

2. The SolidWorks User Group Network website has a new look! the folks at SWUGN have really outdone themselves – check out the new site here: http://www.swugn.org

3. While you’re checking out the new SWUGN website – take a moment to look over the details of the upcoming SolidWorks User Group Network Technical Summit on April 20th. It’s a great opportunity to meet with fellow SolidWorks Users and learn more about using SolidWorks. Details from the website are below:

“The Raleigh/Durham SWUGN Technical Summit features presentations by SolidWorks Product Managers and local SolidWorks expert users. User registration is $40.00 and includes meals and giveaways. Join fellow SolidWorks users from the Raleigh, Durham, and Research Triangle Park area for a full day of learning and networking, and of course, a little fun.”

For more information and to register, follow this link: http://www.swugn.org/swugn/events/6664_ENG_HTML.htm

If you plan on going and would like to carpool, please let me know! I plan to head out of town on Monday afternoon and returning after the summit on Tuesday. While there, I’ll be presenting a technical demo on “Display States for All Kinds of Stuff” in one of the afternoon sessions. I hope to see some more of us from the 757 there!

Greetings everyone!

I want to start by thanking everyone who came to the March meeting. I think we all had a great time and learned alot. A big Thank You goes out to E-man and all the people at Tri-Mech, Rapid Sheet Metal, Busch, and everyone else who assisted with the meeting.

SolidWorks Engineering Stimulus Package:

I’ve had several users ask me aboutgetting a copy of SolidWorks to use and learn with at home. There are several ways to accomplish this –

SolidWorks “Home Use” License – SolidWorks has a provision for CAD professionals to utilize SolidWorks on their home computers as well as at work. Below is an excerpt from the SolidWorks License agreement pertaining to this:

At the time of registration (see Article 9 below) you must inform us of the maximum number of potential users of the licenses you purchase. We recommend you also inform us of the names of all potential users so that we can notify them of upcoming updates and other pertinent information. If the Software is permanently installed on the hard disk or other storage device of a computer (other than a network server) and one person uses that computer more than 80% of the time it is in use, then that person may also use the Software on a portable or home computer while the original copy is not in use. You will keep accurate and up-to-date records of the numbers and locations of all copies of the Software, will supervise and control the use of the Software in accordance with the terms of this Agreement and will provide copies of such records to SolidWorks upon reasonable request.

Whether your company will allow you to install the software on a personal computer is another matter. Check with your CAD administrator at your workplace for details.

SolidWorks Engineering Stimulus Package – This is a great program that (unfortunately) is ending soon. See the description below from SolidWorks’ Website:

The SolidWorks Engineering Stimulus Package provides free SolidWorks 3D CAD software to engineers seeking to develop, upgrade, or refresh the valuable 3D CAD skills that employers need. In addition to the software, you get self-support, free training materials, free certification, and job leads.

I do not know when the program will be ending, but if you act quickly, you may be able to get your foot in the door before it closes. Follow the link below to get to the ESP:

http://www.solidworks.com/sw/esp/engineering_stimulus_package.html

SHRUG Meetings – Very soon, SHRUG will be working to put together a study group for certification. More on this in the future.

SolidWorks User Group Network Technical Summit

The Raleigh/Durham SWUGN Technical Summit features presentations by SolidWorks Product Managers and local SolidWorks expert users. User registration is $40.00 and includes meals and giveaways. Join fellow SolidWorks users from all over North Carolina for a full day of learning and networking, and of course, a little fun. For more information, please follow the link below:

http://www.swugn.org/pages/summit/SWUGN_Summit_RTP.html

There is a link for registration at the bottom of the page. You must register in order to attend!

I will be heading down to Raleigh on the evening of the 19th to attend, and driving back after the summit. If anyone is interested in carpooling, please contact me and let me know.

Next SHRUG Meeting –

Planning for the next SHRUG meeting is underway! We’re aiming for the first or second week in May. If the timing works out, there will be another close on it’s heels. Our next meeting will include a profile about how the design department at Busch leverages SolidWorks to design vacuum pump systems, and a presentation focused on using design tables to create multiple configurations of parts & assemblies.

Invitations will be sent once our dates have been confirmed.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, or suggestions.
